Self-care is something we hear about often, especially when we care about someone using substances. But if we’re honest, it can feel unclear or even out of reach when life feels heavy.
And right now, many of us are carrying more than usual. For Veterans and Veteran families, stress doesn’t just come from within the home — it can come from the world around us, from what we’ve experienced, and from what we continue to see, hear, and feel.
So, let’s simplify this: self-care doesn’t start with doing more; it starts with a pause. A small moment to notice something needs to shift. From there, come back to your body. How are you doing — really? A short walk, a glass of water, a few minutes of rest — these may not feel like much, but they matter.
Think of it like training. You wouldn’t start with a marathon. You begin with consistent steps that build over time. Guilt-free sleep, gentle daily movement, meaningful food choices that fuel your mind, body, and soul. These are not small things; they are strong steps forward. When you care for your body and support your nervous system, you create the conditions for steadier thoughts, emotions, and responses.
If this feels like a lot, start here: Pause. Take one breath. Choose one small act of care today.
If you’re already doing any of this, you’re on your way! In supporting yourself, you are also supporting those you love — and those who have served.
You deserve care, too. ◙
