Language and the words commonly used in society are constantly changing and evolving. While not everyone agrees on language framing and words to use and when, words have the power to inspire, to enable change, and to impact the way people think and behave. Words have the power to perpetuate misconceptions, stereotypes, and stigma or to change hearts and minds.
Eggshells is committed to being nonjudgmental, respectful, and welcoming by creating an inclusive environment for everyone impacted by a loved one’s substance use.
we understand that talking about mental health and substance use within the military and Veteran context requires sensitivity and careful consideration,
we recognize that those with lived or living experience may prefer words that others try to avoid (e.g., addict vs person living with substance use),
we acknowledge that our preferences and identities influence the language we use,
we approach language with intent, attention, and respect,
we honour diverse experiences and perspectives,
we embrace continuous learning about words, their meanings, and their use, and
we play a role in reducing the stigma associated with mental health, wellbeing, and substance use in the military and Veteran community and beyond.
At Eggshells, we continue to approach language with curiosity, seeking insight from others about how words are being used, when, and why. We engage in tough conversations and seize every opportunity to open our hearts and minds — all to provide the best possible environment for Veterans and Veteran Families to heal and flourish.
